Marvel Madness Bracket

What’s the greatest Movie based on a Marvel Comic?

There happen to be 65 movies based on Marvel or Marvel Imprint Comics, so over the next few weeks, we’re going to use a March Madness style bracket to whittle down the field to the single greatest film.

Every Movie that was a theatrical release based on a Marvel Comic (MCU, Sony/Spider-Verse, Fox/X-Men/Fantastic Four), as well as movies based on Marvel Imprints (Kick-Ass and Kingsman) and Malibu Comics (Men in Black) which was acquired by Marvel in 1994 are included in the bracket. Movies were ranked by total worldwide box office gross and seeded accordingly (4 sets of 1-16 just like the march madness tournament, with Howard the Duck and Punisher: Warzone set to compete in a play-in game for the final16 seed in the top region. Since the top 4 highest grossing movies on the list are each of the 4 Avengers titles, the bracket regions are named after the Avengers movie which is the top seed in that region. So without further ado, here’s the bracket, region-by-region.

The Endgame Region:

The Endgame region is shaping up to be an interesting one, it’ pretty light on MCU content, so as this one shakes out, we’ll start to see how the non-Disney films stack-up.

Ultron Region:

The Ultron Region looks at first glance like Black Panther has a pretty clear path to be the top 2 seed, but we’ll see what happens, there are some strong underdogs hiding in the middle seeds.

Infinity Region:

The Infinity region seems to have a lot of consensus “worst of the franchise” entries in it (Blade Trinity, Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, Men in Black: International) so it will be interesting to see if that results in some surprising middle-tier outings making a run deep into the tournament.

Avengers Region:

The Avengers Region looks like it’s Hugh Jackman’s to win or lose with both strongest Wolverine Solo entries in The Wolverine and Logan going up against some vulnerable 1 and 2 seeds with the 2012 Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Here’s the entire Bracket, we’ll be going region by region and round by round over the next several weeks as we see how all of these movies stack up against each other.

Submit a filled out bracket in the comments, I’ll make a special shout-out in the final post of this series to the person with the most matchups predicted correctly.

  1. Do you have a version of this in Excel (or as a PDF) you could share or should we just doodle on the jpg?

  2. This was really hard! My Final 4 (plus losing Elite 8 matchups):
Endgame (Capt Marvel), Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Thor: Ragnarok), Infinity War (Capt America: Civil War), Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse (The Avengers)

After that, Endgame beats GotG2, Spider-Verse beats Infinity War, and Endgame wins overall for me.

Seems there’s a pretty strong recency bias in my picks, even if we only consider the “modern” Marvel Studios entries. I wonder how that compares to more objective ratings, like Metacritic or IMDB. In general my rule was that I’d only pick things that I’d seen, which eliminated some options but nothing that would’ve gotten past the Round of 32 to be sure.
