Marvel Madness: Avengers Region – Round 1

Ok let’s finally finish off Round 1 with the Avengers Region results!

The Avengers Region:

1 vs 16 The sequel the represented the culmination of phase 1 of the MCU vs the sequel that nobody asked for. Elektra is totally out of her weight class against the first Avengers Team-up.

8 vs 9 is Logan vs X-Men: The Last Stand this the best X-Men movie vs. worst X-Men movie? Possibly. It’s certainly a top tier X-Men movie vs a bottom tier X-Men movie. We don’t need to spend a lot of time on this one. Game. Logan.

5 vs 12 I’m not even sure at this point which “Fantastic Four” this is at this point, but whether it’s the 2004 version, or the ill-advised 2015 reboot, it’s getting trounced by Guardians of the Galaxy. No Contest.

4 vs 13 This is the first close match-up of the region. ultimately, Dark Phoenix took some great source material and squandered it, and Venom did some crazy alchemy with a total mish-mash of ingredients and ended up far better than it had any right be. Venom edges this one out.

3 vs 14 The blow-outs continue with Tom Holland’s first MCU outing in Spider-Man: Homecoming mopping the floor with the wholly unnecessary Ben Affleck version of Daredevil.

6 vs 11 The 11 seeds continue their dominance, completing the sweep of the 6 seeds in a nail-biter. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an excellent outing for the MCU, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a truly unique superhero movie that proves what you can really do with animation when you turn a talented team loose on some great material.

7 vs 10 Another upset! Thor: The Dark World was a low point for the MCU because nobody had figured out how to make a compelling Thor movie yet (hint: just let Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston do their thing and get out of the way). The Wolverine was a breath of Hugh Jackman-Scented fresh air after he tried so hard to carry the stink-bombs that were X-Men: The Lasts Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The Wolverine takes the upset.

2 vs 15 Last match of round 1 is a doozy, folks. it’s the biggest upset of the tournament as the totally underrated Blade (15 seed) takes out the up-and-down 2 seed, Iron Man 3. Iron Man 3 has some good stuff in it like the exploration of Tony’s PTSD, but ultimately the the plot is just too unwieldy. But seriously, go back and re-watch Blade. Wesley Snipes is totally committed to the role, it has Kris Kristofferson at his most Kristoffersonian, pre break-out Donal Loque, and Stephen Dorff is *chef’s kiss* as Deacon Frost.

Alright, Friends, we’re finally through round 1 (and 4 movies not counting the TV series behind the MCU now?) So let’s keep it going. Check back soon for round 2!
